The master of architecture (MArch) professional degree is the second component of architectural education at Ball State University. It is for students who seek licensure in the profession and is accredited by the National Architecture Accrediting Board (NAAB).

The college is listed among "America's World-Class Schools of Architecture" by Design Intelligence, ranked in the top 10 nationally for the work in digital design and fabrication and commitment to social justice by Architect magazine, and nationally known for leadership in sustainability.

With two options, BSU graduate degree is for those committed to developing the attitudes, skill, and methods needed to work as an architect in support of a sustainable built environment of the highest quality.

Option 1

Option 1 is designed for students with undergraduate degrees in architecture from universities offering an accredited architecture program or its equivalent (in the case of international students). Your course work will include core courses such as design, historic preservation, culture, etc., plus a concentration. You can choose digital fabrication, sustainable design, historic preservation, landscape architecture, or urban planning, or customize your concentration. In addition, you'll get real-world experience through your internship.

Option 2

Option 2 is designed for students holding a bachelor's degree in a field other than architecture or students of nonaccredited architecture programs. The course work includes undergraduate foundation courses in architecture prior to beginning the master of architecture degree program.

Degree Overview:  A distinct part of the program are required experiential and immersive learning experiences away from the campus including 17-22 week internships in which students work in architecture firms all over the country and world, foreign travel and study in one of Ball State's foreign study centers or with cooperating institutes and universities in the United States and around the world and on-campus immersive and experiential learning experiences such as the Virginia Ball seminar.

Another distinct component of the program is the opportunity to embark on one of several certificate programs offered within the College of Architecture and Planning and in the university at large.

Positions available to a licensed architect, environmental design professional, or an expert in historic preservation can lead to a lifetime of interesting projects and community leadership.

Admission Requirements & Selection

Cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale

  • Completion of a BS/BA in architecture in an accredited program, or a BS/BA in a field other than architecture
  • Resume or CV
  • Statement of purpose
  • Writing sample from an academic course. Example of your best work. No specific length or subject.
  • Three signed letters of recommendation.
  • Portfolio (8.5 x 11 inches bound) including evidence of design work in university courses and studios and/or professional practice. If teamwork is shown, you must clearly indicate what your role was. Artistic work and hands-on building work can also be included. This must be submitted as a hard copy only.
  • TOEFL/IELTS if applicable
