This course encourages cross-disciplinary thinking and applied creativity to spatial, interior architectural and exhibition design practice. You will develop an enhanced ability to formulate and challenge exisitng design philosophies and practice in response to the question ‘what is the meaning of space?’ A holistic approach is taken to rigorous design thinking and the exploration of contemporary design practice in the context of the multi-disciplinary arena of spatial design. You will acquire a heightened understanding of its nature, role and place in the international market-place of today and the future. Embedded within the course structure is the opportunity for individual and collective reflection and the establishment of a contextual and philosophical viewpoint on spatial design thinking, interpretation and realisation.

Career Opportunities

There is a diverse range of opportunities, both nationally and internationally, within the interior design/architectural design/spatial design field. Innovative and creative thinkers and practitioners can make a difference in areas including interiors, interior architecture, retail, exhibition, marketing and promotion, film/TV/stage, animation and illustration as well as those areas thought of as being more traditional. The education sector or further doctoral study are also options.

Admission Requirements & Selection

Candidates must be able to satisfy the general admissions requirements of the University of Huddersfield and the specific requirements of the course in the following ways.

  • A good Honours degree in an appropriate subject or equivalent.
  • Alternative qualifications and/or significant experience may be accepted, subject to approval.
  • International students must provide evidence of proficiency in English: if below the required level you may be able to take one of our pre-sessional English courses.
  • All suitably qualified applicants are normally interviewed or considered for admittance under alternative arrangements. Interview will be by portfolio of practice based and/or theoretical work and a statement of intent.
