This course embraces the diversity and complexity of contemporary art practices. You will study an in-depth programme that enables concept, production and reception of art to be tested within a scrutinised framework of current practices. UoH aim to provide an opportunity for individual growth and professional development. Your work is analysed and supported through a developed critical framework of critiques, seminars, individual tutorials, studio workshops and lectures. A dynamic interplay between theory and practice expands critical discourse and conceptual/creative development.

The ethos of the course is to assist the development of ambitious artists, helping to recognise individual strengths and professional currency that will be central to a sustained and long term career in national and international contemporary art arenas.

Career Opportunities

The intention is to foster contemporary artists to practice in the art world but there is a range of opportunities, both nationally and internationally, within the art sector for creative producers, thinkers and practitioners to work in culture-media, arts business, exhibition, marketing and promotion, film/TV/stage and illustration, as well as more traditional artist routes. The graduates are also well placed for further academic study to PhD level or careers in the education sector.

Admission Requirements & Selection

Candidates must be able to satisfy the general admissions requirements of the University of Huddersfield and the specific requirements of the course in the following ways.

  • A good Honours degree in an appropriate subject or equivalent.
  • Alternative qualifications and/or significant experience may be accepted, subject to approval.
  • International students must provide evidence of proficiency in English: if below the required level you may be able to take one of our pre-sessional English courses.
  • All suitably qualified applicants are normally interviewed or considered for admittance under alternative arrangements. Interview will be by portfolio of practice based and/or theoretical work and a statement of intent.
