BA (Hons) Textile Design for Fashion and Interiors | University of Huddersfield

You’ll explore creativity and innovation through a personal learning journey in a friendly, supportive environment to discover and realise your aspirations. This course is predominately project-based, incorporating live sponsored work with companies and also in-house studio design assignments to produce a portfolio of highly personal designs for cutting edge fashion and interior contexts. UoH offers a broad range of practical and intellectual activities that help you choose a specialist area from print/digital, knit and weave design. In the second year, 50% of projects are industry sponsored and inform the context and interdependence of creativity, professional practice, socio-cultural/business/commercial awareness, materials and techniques knowledge in developing your own textile design style.

- Placements: Between Year 2 and your final year you’ll be offered the opportunity to undertake a work placement in the UK or overseas. Destinations have included working for suppliers to Dolce & Gabbana, Next, M&S and Monsoon as well as working in Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, India, Italy and the USA. Alternatively, you can undertake a study abroad programme in Finland, Holland, Germany, Norway or Poland. Placements/study abroad will enhance your employment prospects.

The optional year-long work placement is highly recommended as it gives you great practical insight into your potential employment choices. And your final year gives you the opportunity to produce a personally defined innovative portfolio which will be your showcase to start your career.
Career OpportunitiesUoH graduates have gone on to work as designers or design consultants for companies such as DKNY, Acorn Swatches, Coates Crafts and Rowan Yarns. Others have gone on to publish their own crafts related books or exhibit their work internationally. Graduates have also successfully set up their own studios or business, others work in galleries, teaching and lecturing, as artist/designer in residence, buyers and stylists. |
Specific requirements for this course are one of the following:
- Successful completion of a foundation course in Art and Design.
- 280 points gained at GCE awards or Advanced Vocational Certificate of Education (AVCE) A level or equivalent.
- An EdExcel/BTEC National Diploma with a distinction and merits in a relevant subject.
- In addition to the above, strong emphasis will be placed on the quality of your portfolio and a satisfactory interview.
- Other suitable experience or qualifications will be considered.
