
This course focuses on producing original creative thinkers who possess the ability to design and make textile craft artefacts to a high standard. The optional year-long work placement is highly recommended as it gives you great practical insight into your potential career choices. The course introduces you to a variety of approaches to textile craft practice exploring textile disciplines such as print, weave, knit and embroidery. Working in a variety of contexts such as design for fashion/interiors, textile art, product innovation and sustainable futures, your practice will be supported with theory related modules. University will encourage you to develop an individual and creative personal vision.

- Placements: The majority of our students undertake short work placements with design studios, craft practitioners and in volunteering opportunities such as schools, galleries and community groups. You may also choose to undertake a paid work placement in the UK or overseas. Alternatively, you could apply to undertake a study abroad programme in Europe or the Alternative Placement Year, which enables you to set up a business for a year with support from the University's Business Mine.

You’ll explore new technologies alongside traditional techniques, and projects will help you to adopt an enterprising and professional approach. Your final year focuses on producing a body of work which will launch your career. Throughout the course you’ll have the opportunity to undertake sponsored projects, professional practice experience and enter national and international design competitions.
Career OpportunitiesUoH graduates have gone on to work as designers or design consultants for companies such as DKNY, Acorn Swatches, Coates Crafts and Rowan Yarns. Others have gone on to publish their own crafts related books or exhibit their work internationally. Graduates have also successfully set up their own studios or business, others work in galleries, teaching and lecturing, as artist/designer in residence, buyers and stylists. |
Specific requirements for this course are one of the following:
- Successful completion of a foundation course in Art and Design.
- 280 points gained at GCE awards or Advanced Vocational Certificate of Education (AVCE) A level or equivalent.
- An EdExcel/BTEC National Diploma with a distinction and merits in a relevant subject.
- In addition to the above, strong emphasis will be placed on the quality of your portfolio and a satisfactory interview.
- Other suitable experience or qualifications will be considered.
