This course provides access to the rich theatrical, TV and musical environment, with its strong worldwide connections. The optional year-long work placement is highly recommended and gives you great practical insight into aspects of costume design and textiles and your potential career choices. UoH combine costume design and production with the innovative use of textile fabrics and processes, making full use of our extensive facilities. You’ll receive an excellent grounding in characterisation, costume design, costume construction, textiles for costume, contextual studies and business. Projects explore a wide range of performance types and you will have the opportunity to undertake collaborative and sponsored projects.

  • Placement: UoH students have undertaken a number of work placements at venues such as West Yorkshire Playhouse, Yorkshire TV, Screen Yorkshire, the Bristol Old Vic and the Hampton Court Flower Show.

Career Opportunities

UoH graduates go on to work in costume design positions or as freelancers. A broad range of employment opportunities are available in the UK and abroad as costume designers, costume cutters, wardrobe assistants, dressers, textile designers and stylists in the theatre, TV, films, dance and opera. Employers include companies such as ITV, Yorkshire TV and the Royal Opera House. Other graduates have set up their own businesses and freelance for a variety of performance areas.

Admission Requirements & Selection

Specific requirements for this course are one of the following:

  • Successful completion of a foundation course in Art and Design.
  • 280 points gained at GCE awards or Advanced Vocational Certificate of Education (AVCE) A level or equivalent.
  • An EdExcel/BTEC National Diploma with a distinction and merits in a relevant subject.
  • In addition to the above, strong emphasis will be placed on the quality of your portfolio and a satisfactory interview.
  • Other suitable experience or qualifications will be considered.
