School of Art, Design and Architecture
University of Huddersfield has a clear mission in the School to foster the next generation of creative practitioners, who will maximise their contribution to the cultural, social and economic well being of society. They do this through valuing reflective and critical approaches to the exchange of ideas, within an equal opportunity context, including the understanding of cultures, diversity, individuality and creative practices.
All staff are researching or engaged in professional practice to ensure the curriculum is current and relevant to today’s needs and fits the ambitions of our students. The school students are ready for employment and/or further study by the unique way they structure the courses reflecting the way in which the creative industries work, thereby offering students a multitude of experience in real life situations.
The school works closely with employers and professional statutory bodies to ensure currency of the curriculum at all times, to ensure all graduates of the School will have well developed creative, technical, entrepreneurial and cognitive skills as well as business knowledge and understanding. The school offers high quality teaching with a strongly vocational emphasis. Huddersfield was ranked joint first out of all Yorkshire universities for high quality staff and lectures in the Opinion panel Research Survey in 2007.

In the summer of 2008 the School moved into a fantastic iconic Creative Arts Building (pictured above) which is a purpose designed studios for Fashion, Graphic Design, Illustration and Digital Media feature in some of the most outstanding new architecture that an art school has seen in decades. Acommodation
Storthes Hall Park, the main purpose-built student village, was once a psychiatric hospital. This was mostly demolished and developed into the student village, opening in 1995. Storthes Hall is 4.5 miles from the main University campus, set in the countryside, near Kirkburton on the A629 road to Penistone. A bus service runs between Storthes Hall and the University between 08:00 and 23:30 (all buses are free to residents before 18:00). While under University ownership (up to 2003) this bus service ran until 2am, providing a safe form of transport home for students after a night out.
Ashenhurst Houses is located closer to the main campus. Ashenhurst has a range of 4 bedroom and 8 bedroom houses, all of which have shared kitchen and lounge areas. Each house has two toilets, two showers and a bath which are shared by the tenants. Ashenhurst also has 24 hour on site security, a TV room and washing/drying facilities which are shared between the whole site. Both Ashenhurst houses and Storthes Hall Village were sold to Ubrique Investments Limited in 2003, having previously been owned by the University.
