This course, fully accredited by the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT), provides an exciting opportunity to specialise in the art and science of building design. It seeks to bridge the gap between the architect – involved with pure design – and the technologist – involved with technological solutions to design.

The course offers a carefully balanced curriculum based on the twin pillars of architectural design and technology, by developing an understanding of architectural design concepts and theories alongside construction technology, sustainability, material science, services and structures. This is complemented by the study of refurbishment and surveying, project management, contracts, and professional practice. The course has gained recognition as a designated Built Environment course from the Construction Industry Council (CIC), and maintains outstanding employment rates.

The course is fully accredited by the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT) and University is recognised as an Accredited Centre for Learning and Teaching of Architectural Technology. The course is also accredited by the Association of Building Engineers (ABE) and is a Construction Industry Council (CIC) endorsed course in the Built Environment.

Graduates are prepared for widely varied career opportunities within a range of organisations. These include architectural and architectural technology practices, local authorities, housing associations and building contractors. Alternatively you could set up your own own private consultancy and practice as an architectural technology professional. The Architectural Technologist can expect a fulfilling career in a number of roles within a design or construction team. Projects could involve preparing detailed design schemes for new buildings, refurbishment and conversions of older buildings, production of detailed drawings, specification writing and material selection, project management and contract administration and preparing documents for statutory approvals.

Industrial Placement & Field Trips

Although there is no formal industrial placement, the course operates a successful Work Placement scheme where you can gain valuable work experience. Study visits are arranged to places of design and architectural interest.

• 120 points with at least one 6-unit award at Grade D or above in an appropriate subject.
• Qualifications equivalent to the above may also be considered, contact the Faculty Office for further information.
• Direct entry to Year 2 (Level 5) may be offered to holders of an HND or HNC in an appropriate subject.
