This course offers a unique blend of aesthetics and innovation. It brings together creative and practical skills and covers both domestic and commercial interior design. It is an exciting and professionally oriented course, which embraces a distinctive approach through studio-based design studies of interior space and volume planning, complemented by awareness of sustainability, colour and texture, professional practice and management, as well as a grasp of associated statutory controls and regulations, technology, and specification writing.

The emphasis of the course is on commercial interior design including offices, retail, healthcare and educational facilities, public spaces, etc. Whilst domestic spatial design and planning is included in the curriculum this course does not offer domestic interior decoration.

Professional accreditation

Upon graduation students may seek membership of both the British Interior Design Association (BIDA) and the Chartered Society of Designers (CSD).

Career Opportunities

Graduates are prepared for a career in commercial interior design and its related disciplines. Career paths could be in office design, retail and exhibition design, healthcare and education facilities, sustainable design, interior architecture and design management.

The course's professional and diverse orientation could also enable you to establish a career within architectural and interior design consultancies. Alternatively, you may choose to set up your own Interior Design practice and enter into building or supervisory contracts for both residential and commercial projects. The career potential of the BA (Hons) Interior Design degree is based upon definitions set by The British Interior Design Association (BIDA) on Interior Designers and their roles.

Industrial Placement & Field Trips

Although there is no formal industrial placement, the course operates a successful Work Placement scheme where you can gain valuable work experience. For further details on this scheme please contact the Course Leader. Study visits are arranged to places of design and architectural interest.

Admission Requirements & Selection
  • 120 points with at least one 6-unit award at Grade D or above in an appropriate subject.
  • Qualifications equivalent to the above may also be considered, contact the Faculty Office for further information.
  • Direct entry to Year 2 may be offered to holders of an HND or HNC in an appropriate subject.
