
This course has an open, broad and innovative approach to digital animation. You will work on fictional strategies and environment creation, characterisation and character design, concept art and illustration, scriptwriting and storyboarding as well as animating. You will study the contemporary genres of film, computer generated imagery (CGI), experimental narrative, sequences for games, commercial and documentary animation, developing your critical, cultural and contextual skills in parallel with your increasing creative and technical competence.

Companies that employ the students include The Mill, Rebellion, Pikcells and Framestore. Some students secure placements abroad. There is also support for students in setting up their own companies. Some placements are salaried and no tuition fees are payable during your sandwich year.

Working within an expanded tradition of animation, including the abstract and the traditions of the fabulous and the fantastic, you will explore 2D and 3D digital content for a range of formats, platforms and environments using industry standard software and hardware. You will produce creative and engaging work including short narrative films and experimental animation or novel forms of emerging audio-visual storytelling as well as CGI sequences for film and games.
Career OpportunitiesUoH graduates have taken up worldwide employment opportunities in both animation and games companies and the film industry delivering inspiring 3D animations, stunning visual effects and concept art for games. UoH also actively support you in launching your own company. Career opportunities include animator, storyboard artist, concept artist, 3D artist, art director and effects/technical director. |
Specific requirements for this course are one of the following:
- Successful completion of a foundation course in Art and Design.
- 280 points gained at GCE awards or Advanced Vocational Certificate of Education (AVCE) A level or equivalent.
- An EdExcel/BTEC National Diploma with a distinction and merits in a relevant subject.
- In addition to the above, strong emphasis will be placed on the quality of your portfolio and a satisfactory interview.
- Other suitable experience or qualifications will be considered.
