This course focuses on contemporary fine art practice and promotes individual and original creative expression. We encourage you to become a contemporary practitioner and enter your profession or industry at the highest level with a range of transferable skills. UoH focuses on the interdisciplinary nature of contemporary art with no restrictions on media. You’ll be able to work with painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, sound, video, photography and performance. UoH supports you if you wish to take on difficult, complex and ambitious forms of ideas within your own creative activities.

  • Campus: Huddersfield / Oldham / Barnsley
  • Placements: An optional sandwich year can be taken after Year 2 in an industrial and/or educational establishment in the UK or abroad. UoH has established links with regional artist studio groups, art galleries, curators, local business and industry.

The course is organised around the interrelationship between studio activity, professional orientation and critical reflection. You’ll develop an understanding of practical skills, research, knowledge and contextual dialogue, as well as skills of evaluation, interpretation and presentation.

Career Opportunities

UoH graduates have won awards and prizes such as the Northern Graduates Prize, The Alternative Turner Prize and 4 New Sensations, a joint venture between the Saatchi Gallery and Channel 4. You may go on to further study at the Royal College of Art or a successful career as a gallery artist, in museums and curatorial employment, media or teaching.

Admission Requirements & Selection

Specific requirements for this course are one of the following:

  • Successful completion of a foundation course in Art and Design.
  • 280 points gained at GCE awards or Advanced Vocational Certificate of Education (AVCE) A level or equivalent.  
  • An EdExcel/BTEC National Diploma with a distinction and merits in a relevant subject.
  • In addition to the above, strong emphasis will be placed on the quality of your portfolio and a satisfactory interview. 
  • Other suitable experience or qualifications will be considered.
Course Structure

Year 1

  • There is the opportunity for work to be exhibited on a regular basis. You will also be introduced to a variety of research and analytical contexts including more practice based support in exhibition preparation, promotion and management.

Year 2

  • The second year continues the approach and developments made during Year 1 but extends individual studio practice. The expectation is that each student will take a greater responsibility for their individual concepts and working practices.

Year 3 sandwich - Optional 48 week work placement

Year 3 full-time/Year 4 sandwich

  • In consultation with course tutors you will design your own scheme of work in respect of future career direction. The final year unites practical, theoretical and professional career elements to the highest professional and academic levels. A final degree show launches your career and provides a showcase of your work for professional advice.
