On this course you can experiment with the embellishment and manipulation of a range of hard and soft tactile materials. Our studios and print, digital, laser, embroidery and CAD workshops are friendly supportive learning environments; tutorials, lectures, workshops support a broad range of practical and intellectual activities. In your design projects you will explore textile, paper, glass, ceramics, plastics, wood and metal alongside new technologies and smart materials. Many of your live briefs, which will range from fashion accessories products to conceptual spatial projects, will be sponsored by leading companies from the fashion/interior design world. These projects will help you understand the relationship between creativity, innovation, professional practice, and cultural and business awareness in developing your own design style.

  • Campus: Huddersfield
  • Duration: 3 years full-time / 4 years sandwich
  • Placements: Between Year 2 and your final year you’ll be offered the opportunity to undertake a work placement in the UK or overseas. Recent destinations have included Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, India, Italy and the USA. Alternatively, you could undertake a study abroad programme in Finland, Holland or Poland. Placements/study abroad will enhance your understanding of surface design and your employment prospects.

You will develop, during your final year, a portfolio of innovative ideas and designs as a springboard to your career. The optional year-long work placement is highly recommended as it gives you great practical insight into your potential career choices.

Career Opportunities

UoH graduates are prepared for a wealth of job opportunities including in-house designer or freelance designer with interior designers or architects, buyer, visual merchandiser, trend/colour forecaster, surface design management and teacher/lecturer. UoH graduates also progress to Master's courses at Huddersfield and other universities.

Admission Requirements & Selection

Specific requirements for this course are one of the following:

  • Successful completion of a foundation course in Art and Design.
  • 280 points gained at GCE awards or Advanced Vocational Certificate of Education (AVCE) A level or equivalent.
  • An EdExcel/BTEC National Diploma with a distinction and merits in a relevant subject.
  • In addition to the above, strong emphasis will be placed on the quality of your portfolio and a satisfactory interview.
  • Other suitable experience or qualifications will be considered.
